We offer several different styles of retainers. Every patient is individually evaluated to determine what retainer best fits their needs. From removable to fixed, there is a retainer for everyone!
Retainer Instructions
Now that your appliances have been removed, retainer(s) will hold your teeth in their new position. Think of your retainer(s) as "helpers" in keeping a good looking smile.
The retainer(s) should be worn 24 hours daily until further instructed. Do not wear retainers during eating or vigorous sports.
Brush you retainer(s) with a toothbrush and toothpaste. You may want to soak them in mouthwash to keep them fresh. A monthly soak in Efferdent will remove excess plaque.
These retainers are delicate so please keep them in your case when they are not in your mouth. In the event of lost or broken retainer(s), there is a replacement or repair charge.
If your retainer(s) should become lost or broken, please contact our office.
Hawley (Acrylic) Retainers
The Hawley retainer, one of the most common types, is a removable retainer made of a combination of metal wires and sturdy acrylic, and is designed to keep your teeth in place. This retainer is specially made from impressions of your teeth so that it fits snugly and comfortably in the roof of your mouth, while any wire or acrylic framing keeps your teeth in perfect position. The acrylic can also be personalized with a large number of colors and/or patterns.

MagneTainer™
What is the MagneTainer™?
A MagneTainer™ is a state-of-the-art fixed and flossable retainer. Each retainer contains sets of neodymium iron boron magnets that are encased in gold, sealed in dental resin and then placed in stainless steel “cans” for wear protection. They are glued to the back of your teeth with dental adhesive and use attractive forces to allow the teeth to function naturally while maintaining their treated positions. Dentists and hygienists appreciate that patients with a MagneTainer™ are able to floss without using special flossing devices.
MagneTainers™ are the patented device of Drs. Gene, Eric, and Aron Dellinger and are available only at Orthodontic Specialty Services.
What are the benefits of a MagneTainer™?
A MagneTainer™ is a fixed appliance; this is especially helpful with patients that may have issues of compliance with a removable retainer.
A MagneTainer™ is flossable. With the traditional style fixed retainer it was impossible to floss without using special flossing devices. Often times that deterred patients from flossing at all. No special devices are needed to floss with the MagneTainer™!
Bonded (Fixed) Retainers
Bonded lingual retainers are cemented directly to the inside surface of your lower canines (eye teeth). This is one of the best ways to prevent your lower teeth from shifting as it is permanently attached! Patients with bonded lingual retainers must be careful with their bite as the bonding material may break due to incorrect biting and cause teeth to shift quickly. As with removable retainers, it is important to keep them clean. When brushing, make sure to carefully clean the inside of your lower teeth as well as the wire.
